Get pumped for the WCLAX 2018 After Party hosted by GoDaddy at Blue Cow Kitchen

After Camp on Saturday, September 22, all event attendees are invited to join us for a legendary after party sponsored by GoDaddy.

The party will be held at Blue Cow Kitchen and will start at 7:30pm. All attendees are invited! The after party is a great way to meet and connect with other attendees and speakers in a casual environment.

Blue Cow will be serving various appetizers from their seasonal menu featuring organic and sustainable ingredients sourced from local farms. Options will be available for everyone regardless of your dietary preferences. We’ll have meat for the omnivorous as well as selections for vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free. We sampled the food a few weeks ago and all of it was delicious. The vegan pizza broke my meat-eating mind a little bit (in a very good way).

While food is being served, it’s not a dinner so we do recommend you grab yourself a bite to eat between closing remarks at camp and the start of the party.

Of course we’ll have drinks too! Each attendee will get a free drink ticket (thanks again GoDaddy!). Please bring your ID and your WCLAX name tag (provided at registration in the morning) so you can get the ticket you’re entitled to.

Finally, we’re planning this to be a party that’s fun for everyone regardless of age! We’ll have non-alcohol related fun for everyone in attendance!

The WCLAX 2018 Schedule

On Saturday, September 22 and Sunday, September 23 you’re invited to join us for two full days of WordPress presentations, workshops, and discussions covering the WordPress basics, the power of the community, advanced and intermediate theme and plugin development, accessibility, and of course Gutenberg!

There’s 33 total sessions this and there will be nearly 50 speakers, panelists, and presenters in attendance to share their experiences, knowledge, and expertise.

Check out the Schedule

In the coming weeks we’ll introduce you to all of these incredible speakers and help you get to know them in advance of camp. It’s up to you to decide your journey during camp but we’re going to ensure you have everything you need to know about our speakers and sessions to help you plan that path before your arrive.

Are you excited about a speaker? Tweet them and let them know!

Tickets are still on sale! Grab one while they last or apply to volunteer.

Call for Volunteers!

Like all WordCamps, WordCamp LA is organized and run wholly by volunteers. We need you to help make it a success! Volunteering at a WordCamp is a wonderful way to give back to the community that provides so much for us on a daily basis. Plus, it’s a great way to make new, local WordPress friends!

We welcome anyone to apply to volunteer, no matter your abilities! For example, if you would perform best at a stationary position – e.g. registration or swag table versus parking lot attendee (lots of walking) – we can certainly accommodate.

Please read through the following to get an idea of the responsibilities for volunteers, and feel free to email your excited and helpful Volunteer Wrangler, Lara Schenck, with any questions at lara@notlaura.com.

Volunteer Duties

We will all share responsibility for the following tasks, and if your abilities mean one task is more fitting than others, we can certainly accommodate.

  • Registration – Greet conference attendees at the registration booth and provide them with their conference badge and parking pass, if needed.
  • Swag table – Distribute awesome t-shirts!
  • Presentation room attendees – Help speakers set up their computers and make sure everything runs smoothly in the presentation rooms.
  • Parking lot shepherd – Greet conference attendees and help them to know where to go from the parking lot.
  • Setup and tear down – All volunteers will be expected (unless otherwise determined) to help set up and tear down the conference materials both Saturday and Sunday.
  • General help – Be an information resource for attendees, and know where to route any questions you can’t answer.

Things to Note

While you will be at WordCamp, volunteering is not free admission to WordCamp… You will be provided with free admission but you’ll also be expected to work! Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to give back to the WordPress community by ensuring the event runs smoothly and that attendees enjoy their experience.

That said, if there is a specific talk you want to see, we might be able to make it happen, so be sure to speak up when we create the volunteer schedule.

Interested?

All About Our Second Annual Beginner’s Day

Last year at WordCamp Los Angeles we hosted a half-day workshop focused on teaching beginners the basics of WordPress. The whole day flowed as if you were in 1 class, even though we had multiple speakers presenting different topics.

This year we are bringing it back, but making it even better!

We’ll be focusing on working on a site as a true beginner, primarily focused on users who want to start their own business website, or personal website. We are going to replace some complex topics from last year (like FTP and GIT) with more tutorial and walkthroughs for how to setup your site, customize your site, and then maintain and manage it.

Gutenberg & Content

If you want to build a website, any website, it is because you want to put a piece of content online. This year during the Beginner Workshop we will focus on just that, the content.

What is the best way to put your unique piece of content online? How will you make it different from other sites to showcase who you are?

Gutenberg, or the new WordPress editor is coming into core, so we will want to also focus some time on teaching you how to use it, and how to get the most out of it for your website.

Managing Your Website

There are many options for managed WordPress hosting, however you should have some basic understanding of what that means and how to do it yourself as needed. We will walk through what maintenance of a website means, and things you can do to keep your website secure from hackers, and create contingency plans in case you lose something.

It is one thing to create a website, it is another to make sure it is constantly up to date and backed up.

What We Ask of You

We know that the Beginner day is going to be “too” beginner for some, but maybe a bit more advanced for others. What we want is attendees that are eager to take away something from the workshop. It may be a long day for some, so come ready to learn something, even if it takes till the very end.

Tickets

Tickets will be available to any attendee that wishes to attend but tickets will be limited! Make sure to subscribe to our mailing list so that you’re notified as soon as tickets go on sale!
